Knotting novice.

Standard situation - frustrated because I never went to Scouts, so I now have a lifelong fixation with quality braid and the way knots are made and transformed, what makes a 'good' knot and what makes it poor, how the wrong rope can turn a perfectly useful knot into a disaster waiting to happen.

I have a fascination with the numerous ways that the same knot can be made, how those ways were discovered and the lives of the people who developed the methods and used the knots in their working lives. How did they think, and how much of their lives was spent enjoying the 'handling' of a piece of rope.

Like life forms, knots have probably been created and then lost in history, like the amazing Inka Khipu, a whole way of life literally 'tied up' in a bundle of knots, their meaning and purpose now lost. http://khipukamayuq.fas.harvard.edu/WhatIsAKhipu.html I feel sad at that loss and hope that the knots we have today can be preserved for the future generations and that no more knowledge of knots will be lost.

Knots and rope are deeply a part of humanity, they are as much a part of man as is his need for the company of his dog. Both have been part of our evolution for so long, we should ensure that both are maintained within modern society along with the TV, the computer and the mobile phone. I hope this Wiki can help that joining happen.
